Joan's in the Park French Toast!

Dave and I stopped in to Joan's in the Park last week to celebrate my very first paycheck at my new job.  It was just going to be a flatbread and a glass of wine.  Yea, right.  We had full blown dinner!  How can you not when everything there is so darn good!

We started out with the crab cake.  It's the best.  I used to think Oceanaire had the best crab cake.  Not anymore!  We even eat the green garnish so we can get every last bit of the caper and tarragon aioli.  It's more accepted in a nice restaurant than licking the plate!

Then we split the apple goat cheese salad, another of our favorites.

While we were waiting for our entrees the folks next to us were served the alder plank shrimp appetizer.  Oh my did that look good!  Next time for sure!

For my entree I had the Tomato Avocado Flatbread (minus the cilantro of course).  The pickled onions on this are so good!  Don't think Vlasic pickles, think sweetened onions with a hint of heat.  I could have eaten a plate of them alone!

Dave had the rib-eye.  Those of you who know me know I'm not a big steak eater.  Given the option I'll go for fish, pasta or poultry on a menu over a steak.  Susan may have converted me.  I don't know what she put on that steak or how she cooked it but it was by far the best steak I've ever had!  And it smelled and tasted just as good the next day when Dave warmed some of his left-overs up!


So what's this about French toast, you must be asking.  Well, with each meal at Joan's you are served a loaf of wonderful bread.  It's a soft, eggy bread topped with toasted onions.  It is SO good, you will be temped to eat the whole darn loaf right there!  Dave and I use every ounce of willpower we have not to do that.  We learned after our first visit to Joan's that this bread makes outstanding toast.  The question came up last week, would it make good French toast?

Joan wasn't so sure because of the onions.  Dave was confident.  I was willing to give it a try!  So this morning we had Joan's in the Park French Toast.

How was it?  How does it look?  The egg batter was a couple of Otis Family Farm's organic brown eggs, a little milk and some vanilla.  



I topped it with fresh raspberries from Farmer's Market and bananas I had macerated in a little vanilla sugar.  Dave had a side of left-over Joan's in the Park rib-eye steak and I had mine with a couple of slices of Otis Family Farm's smoked bacon.



The light airy bread made light airy french toast.  It just melted in your mouth!  The hint of onion was interesting but not in a bad way, at least not for us.  And Dave slathered his with maple syrup and ate every last bit.

So does Joan's in the Park bread make good French toast?  Yep!  If you haven't been there yet you need to go.
